Gabion Basket Coating Selection Guide For Different Environments

Oct 29, 2026|

Selecting the right coating for gabion baskets is just as critical as choosing the right structural design, as it directly determines the lifespan and safety of your retaining project. From heavy galvanized wire to Galfan and specialized PVC coatings, different manufacturing processes like double-twisted weaving and rigid welding require specific anti-corrosion solutions. This technical guide breaks down the performance, standards, and ideal application scenarios for each coating option to help you make informed engineering decisions.

Double-Twisted Woven Mesh

Double-twisted mesh is manufactured by mechanical weaving, during which the steel wire undergoes bending and twisting. Therefore, its coating must possess high ductility and adhesion to ensure that the coating does not peel or crack under high-strength twisting and field deformation.

Suitable Coatings Include:

Heavy Galvanized

Features: The most basic and cost-effective solution. Processed via hot-dip galvanizing, with a zinc coating weight typically ranging from 200 g/m2 to 300 g/m2 (compliant with ASTM A641 / EN 10244-2).

Applicable Scenarios: Standard terrestrial retaining walls, hydraulic engineering, arid and weakly corrosive environments.

Galfan / Zinc-5% Aluminum (95% Zinc + 5% Aluminum + Mischmetal)

Features: The primary high-end anti-corrosion solution for woven mesh today. Its corrosion-resistant lifespan is 2 to 3 times that of traditional hot-dip galvanizing of equal thickness, with exceptional ductility that maintains tight adhesion during severe twisting.

Applicable Scenarios: Alternating wet-and-dry riverbeds, flood control, moderately corrosive environments (design life of 50+ years).

PVC / PE Coating over Galvanized or Galfan

Features: A protective plastic layer (PVC or PE) approximately 0.5 mm thick is extruded over the galvanized or Galfan wire. It effectively blocks ultraviolet (UV) radiation, strong acids, alkalis, and seawater erosion.

Applicable Scenarios: Coastal engineering, saline-alkali soil, acidic water, wastewater treatment zones, and other severely corrosive environments (design life up to 70 to 100 years).

PA6 (Polyamide 6 / Nylon) Coating

Features: Offers higher wear resistance, low-temperature crack resistance, and tensile strength compared to standard PVC. It will not crack under harsh stone friction or in extreme cold climates.

Applicable Scenarios: Cold regions and high-velocity water flow projects with heavy sand and sediment abrasion.

Gabion welded wire mesh

Gabion welded wire mesh are formed by crossing steel wires and welding them together at high-pressure electric resistance intersections. The instantaneous high temperatures generated during the welding process can easily melt or burn the protective coating on the wire surface. Therefore, coating processes for welded wire mesh are divided into "Galvanized Before Welding (GBW)" and "Galvanized/Coated After Welding (GAW)".

Suitable Coatings Include:

  • Galfan Coating (Zinc-5% Aluminum)

Features: The most recommended anti-corrosion solution for welded panels (typically Galvanized Before Welding, utilizing advanced CNC welding that does not burn the zinc coating). A galvanic protection effect occurs around the weld points, and the aluminum within the coating auto-repairs the edges of the weld joints.

Applicable Scenarios: High-end engineering retaining walls, architectural landscape walls, foundation pit shoring.

  • Hot-Dip Galvanized After Welding (HDGAW)

Features: Low-carbon steel wires are first welded into panels and then entirely immersed in a molten zinc bath at approximately 450 degrees Celsius. The key advantage is that 100% of the weld points are covered with a thick zinc layer, eliminating anti-corrosion dead spots at weld joints. The zinc coating weight is exceptionally high (up to 400 g/m2 to 600 g/m2).

Applicable Scenarios: High-specification engineering requirements, heavy moisture, and severe industrial corrosive environments.

  • Electro-Galvanized + Powder Coating / PVC Coating

Features: Panels are welded first, then finished with a polyester powder coating or PVC immersion coating on the surface. Offers a rich variety of architectural colors (such as black, dark gray, and green), an exceptionally smooth and attractive surface finish, and strong weather resistance.

Applicable Scenarios: Landscape design, building facades, luxury villa boundary walls, and patio privacy screening.

  • Stainless Steel (304 / 316 Raw Wire - No Coating Required)

Features: Welded directly using 304 or 316 stainless steel wire, requiring no surface coating whatsoever. Delivers ultimate corrosion resistance and ultra-high mechanical strength, providing a sleek, high-tech industrial aesthetic.

Applicable Scenarios: High-salinity coastal landscape projects and premium interior or exterior architectural decoration.
