Sep 17, 2026| Wondering how are gabion baskets installed, and do they need foundations? While gabions are relatively easy to assemble compared to traditional masonry, proper installation is critical to ensure a long-lasting, straight, and safe retaining wall.
Foundation Preparation: Do gabion baskets need foundations? Yes. Even though they are flexible, a level and compacted gravel base is essential to prevent uneven sinking or structural leaning over time. For walls over one meter high, a compacted trench or concrete leveling pad is mandatory.
Assembly and Lacing: Unfold the flat-packed baskets, tie the vertical corners securely using high-tensile lacing wire or C-rings, and align them neatly along the trench.
Stone Packing & Bracing: Fill the baskets in layers (usually one-third at a time). Insert internal horizontal stiffeners (bracing wires) across opposite panels to prevent the front and back faces from bulging outward. Use angular, weather-resistant stones (like granite or basalt) to minimize internal voids.
Lid Closure & Tiering: Once filled to the top, pull the lid tight and lace it securely. For higher walls, step back each upper tier to form a stable, battered (sloped backward) structure.
